My parents bought a PC with powered speakers in 1995, which was the first machine on which I could really conduct experiments with sound. Audio tapes fascinated me through my whole life, but once I discovered the possibilities offered by a microphone and Windows Sound Recorder... it was all over.

For a long time, I had almost no other equipment: two non-MIDI keyboards and a shareware version of ReBirth RB-133 — later supplemented by AudioMulch — all running into my right-hand recording software, Cool Edit (which would later become Adobe Audition). With this rudimentary setup, I made noises and beats into short little songs, wearing my influences on my sleeve.

USE is really three of these pieces, stitched together in March 2003 for the University of Toronto Schools' annual "Twig Tape" compilation, which I also co-produced that year. Being a kind of acid techno trance thing with multiple personality disorder, it definitely stood out among the other students' bebop and pop tunes.
